What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty reshapes the bone and cartilage of the nose — to refine its size and shape, straighten a crooked bridge, lift a drooping tip, remove a hump, or restore breathing through a blocked airway. It sits at the meeting point of surgery and aesthetics: a few millimetres decide whether a nose looks natural or operated on, which is why surgeon judgement matters more here than in almost any other procedure.

A good rhinoplasty is planned around your whole face — balanced with your chin and profile — not around a photograph of someone else’s nose. The aim at Clinic Elia is a nose that fits your features so well that nobody guesses you had surgery — they just notice you look better.

Aesthetic and functional: two jobs, often one operation

Many patients come for the way their nose looks and discover during assessment that a deviated septum has been quietly restricting their breathing for years. The two problems are usually fixed in the same operation.

  • Aesthetic rhinoplasty addresses the visible shape: the hump on the bridge, the width, the tip, the nostrils, the overall balance with your chin and forehead.
  • Functional rhinoplasty (septoplasty and related work) corrects the internal structures — most often a deviated septum or enlarged turbinates — to open the airway.

Correcting both together means one anaesthetic, one recovery, and a result that works as well as it looks.

Open or closed technique?

There are two surgical approaches, and the honest answer about which is “better” is: the one that fits your case.

Closed rhinoplasty is performed entirely through incisions hidden inside the nostrils. There is no external scar at all, swelling tends to settle a little faster, and it suits noses that need moderate reshaping.

Open rhinoplasty adds a small incision across the columella — the strip of skin between the nostrils. It gives the surgeon full direct vision of the nasal framework, which matters for complex tip work, significant asymmetry and revision cases. The scar is a few millimetres long and typically fades to near-invisibility.

Your surgeon will recommend an approach after examining your nose, not before. Be cautious of any clinic that promises a technique over the internet without ever measuring your anatomy.

Ultrasonic, preservation and non-surgical options

Beyond open and closed, you will see other names — here is what they actually mean:

  • Ultrasonic (piezo) rhinoplasty uses ultrasonic instruments to reshape the nasal bones precisely — sculpting rather than breaking — which can mean less bruising and finer control over the bridge. It is a tool used within an open or closed operation, not a separate surgery.
  • Preservation rhinoplasty aims to preserve and reposition the natural bridge (dorsum) rather than removing and rebuilding it — suitable for selected noses, and a judgement your surgeon makes on your anatomy.
  • Ethnic and male rhinoplasty are not different operations but different goals: preserving the character and proportions that suit your face, rather than imposing one template.

What about “non-surgical” or “liquid” rhinoplasty? That uses dermal fillers to camouflage a small bump or asymmetry. It is temporary (months, not permanent), cannot make a nose smaller or fix breathing, and is a non-surgical treatment — not what this page covers. For a lasting structural change, rhinoplasty is surgery.

Approach What it is Who it suits
Closed Incisions inside the nostrils, no external scar Moderate reshaping
Open Tiny columella incision, full framework access Complex tip, asymmetry, revision
Ultrasonic (piezo) Ultrasonic bone sculpting within open/closed Precise bridge work, less bruising
Preservation Preserves the natural dorsum Selected noses, on assessment
Non-surgical (filler) Temporary filler camouflage Minor, temporary touch-ups only

Are you a good candidate?

Rhinoplasty tends to give its best results when a few things are true:

  • Your facial growth is complete — in practice, from around age 18.
  • You are in good general health and, ideally, a non-smoker around the time of surgery.
  • You have a specific, realistic goal: a smoother bridge, a refined tip, easier breathing — rather than a wish to look like a different person.
  • Your expectations survive an honest conversation. Skin thickness, cartilage strength and healing all shape what is achievable, and a good surgeon explains your version of realistic before you commit.

Revision patients — people whose first rhinoplasty elsewhere disappointed them — need particularly careful assessment. Revision work is more complex than primary surgery, and honest advice sometimes includes waiting a full year for tissues to settle before operating again.

How the operation works

Rhinoplasty at Clinic Elia is performed at Acıbadem, an accredited private hospital in Istanbul, under general anaesthesia and usually takes between one and a half and three hours.

The surgeon lifts the soft tissue from the nasal framework, reshapes bone and cartilage according to the plan you agreed together — reducing a hump, refining the tip, straightening the septum — then redrapes the tissue and closes. A small splint protects the new shape for about a week. Modern techniques mean packing is lighter and recovery more comfortable than the stories you may have heard from a decade ago.

You stay one night in hospital, then recover at your hotel with the team a message away.

Recovery: what actually happens, week by week

Days 1–3. Swelling and bruising around the eyes peak — this looks more dramatic than it feels. Discomfort is usually mild and well controlled. You sleep with your head elevated and avoid bending over.

Day 7, roughly. The splint comes off. This is the moment most patients see the new shape for the first time — still swollen, but recognisably theirs. Most international patients fly home shortly after.

Weeks 2–4. Bruising fades; most people feel comfortable at work and socially. Glasses need to rest off the bridge (taping or alternatives help) and strenuous exercise stays on hold.

Months 2–6. Swelling continues to settle quietly. The bridge refines first; the tip, where skin is thickest, takes longest.

Around 12 months. The final, fully refined result. Judging a rhinoplasty before a year has passed is judging an unfinished picture — which is also why our follow-up runs a full twelve months.

What makes a rhinoplasty look natural?

Three things, in our experience. First, proportion: the nose is planned against your chin, forehead and profile, not in isolation. Second, restraint: removing too much cartilage creates the pinched, scooped look that reads as “surgery” from across a room — and often causes breathing problems years later. Third, structure: preserving and reinforcing support so the result holds its shape for decades, not months.

This is where the surgeon’s experience is the product. Op. Dr. Ali Çetinkaya plans and performs every rhinoplasty at Clinic Elia personally — the same specialist who assesses your photographs operates on you and reviews your healing.

Rhinoplasty in Turkey: cost and practicalities

Istanbul has become one of the busiest rhinoplasty destinations in the world, and prices at reputable clinics typically run well below UK, European and North American levels for the same operation. Your price depends on the surgical plan — primary or revision, aesthetic alone or combined with septum work — and is confirmed in writing before you book.

A typical trip looks like this: fly in and meet your surgeon for the in-person consultation, surgery the following day, one night in hospital, recovery at your hotel, splint removal around day seven, then home. Plan for roughly seven days in Istanbul. The all-inclusive package covers surgery, hospital, hotel, VIP transfers, an English-speaking coordinator and twelve months of remote follow-up.

Frequently asked questions

Is rhinoplasty painful?

Less than most people expect. The operation is under general anaesthesia, and afterwards the main sensations are congestion and pressure rather than sharp pain, managed with simple medication.

Will there be a visible scar?

Closed rhinoplasty leaves no external scar. Open rhinoplasty leaves a few-millimetre mark under the tip that typically fades to near-invisibility.

When will I see the final result?

The shape is visible when the splint comes off at about a week, but swelling refines gradually — the true final result shows at around twelve months.

Can rhinoplasty fix my breathing?

Yes. A deviated septum and related issues can be corrected in the same operation as the aesthetic work.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey?

Around seven days — surgery, one hospital night, recovery, and splint removal before you fly.

Is the result permanent?

Yes. Once healed, the structural changes are permanent, though the nose ages naturally with the rest of your face.

What about revision rhinoplasty?

We assess revision cases individually. They are more complex than first-time surgery, and honest advice sometimes means waiting for tissues to fully settle before operating again.

What is ultrasonic (piezo) rhinoplasty?

Ultrasonic instruments reshape the nasal bone precisely, which can mean less bruising and finer control. It is a technique used within an open or closed operation, chosen on your anatomy.

Is non-surgical or liquid rhinoplasty the same thing?

No — that is temporary filler to camouflage a small bump, not surgery. It cannot reduce a nose or fix breathing. Rhinoplasty is a permanent, structural operation.

Do you do ethnic and male rhinoplasty?

Yes — with the goal of preserving the character and proportions that suit your face, not imposing one look.

How do I avoid a botched nose job?

Choose a specialist rhinoplasty surgeon who examines you in person, keeps your goals realistic and preserves structure. Over-resection is the usual cause of a botched, pinched result — and of breathing problems later. Learn what a genuine result looks like in our honest before & after guide.

How much does rhinoplasty cost in Turkey?

Well below UK, EU or US prices for the same operation; your figure depends on whether it is primary or revision, and aesthetic alone or combined with septum work — confirmed in writing. See plastic surgery cost & packages.
