Remove stubborn pockets of fat that resist diet and exercise, and refine your body contour — with an experienced surgeon and honest expectations.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction removes localised deposits of fat — for example on the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms or under the chin — to improve body contour. It is a contouring procedure, not a weight-loss method or a treatment for obesity, and works best on stubborn fat in someone at a stable weight. Your surgeon will be honest about what liposuction can realistically achieve for you.

Techniques: tumescent, laser, VASER and liposculpture

You will see several names for liposuction — they mostly describe how the fat is loosened before it is removed:

  • Tumescent liposuction — the standard: a fluid numbs the area and shrinks blood vessels, then fat is suctioned through a thin cannula. Safe and reliable.
  • Laser liposuction — a laser helps liquefy fat and can encourage mild skin tightening in some areas.
  • VASER (ultrasound) liposuction — ultrasound energy breaks up fat before removal, allowing more precise, detailed contouring.
  • Liposculpture / 360 — an approach rather than a machine: sculpting several areas together (often the whole waistline, “360”) for a defined result, sometimes transferring fat elsewhere.

No device replaces the surgeon’s judgement — a good result comes from careful, even removal, not the brand on the brochure. “Non-invasive” fat treatments (freezing, injections) are a separate, non-surgical option that removes far less and is not what this page covers.

Areas liposuction can treat

Area Common concern
Chin & neck (submental) A double chin or soft jawline
Abdomen & flanks A stubborn stomach or “love handles”
Arms Fullness on the upper arms
Thighs & hips Saddlebags and inner-thigh fullness
Back & bra line Rolls that clothing highlights

Chin and neck liposuction is one of the most requested small-area procedures — a short operation that can noticeably define the jawline in the right candidate.

What liposuction can do

  • Removes stubborn fat that resists diet and exercise.
  • Refines and smooths body contour.
  • Can treat several areas in one session (within safe limits).
  • Results are long-lasting when weight is maintained.

Suitability and results vary; a surgeon assessment confirms what is realistic.

Are you a good candidate?

Good candidates are near a stable, healthy weight with localised fat and reasonable skin elasticity, in good health, with realistic expectations. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss.

How liposuction is performed

  • Technique: tumescent liposuction; fat is loosened and suctioned through a thin cannula via tiny incisions.
  • Anaesthesia: general or local with sedation, depending on the areas.
  • A compression garment is fitted to support healing and contour.

Liposuction recovery

Typical pattern; healing varies.

  • Week 1: soreness, bruising and swelling; wear the compression garment as advised.
  • Weeks 2–4: most bruising fades; many return to light work; continue the garment.
  • Weeks 4–6: gradually resume exercise as your surgeon advises.
  • Months 1–6: swelling settles and the final contour emerges.

Is liposuction safe?

In a properly equipped hospital with a qualified surgeon, liposuction is a well-established, safe operation — but it is real surgery, not a lunchtime treatment. The risks that make headlines — too much fat removed at once, unaccredited settings, inadequate anaesthesia cover — are largely about who does it and where. At Clinic Elia liposuction is performed by Op. Dr. Ali Çetinkaya at Acıbadem, an accredited private hospital in Istanbul, with sensible volume limits and proper aftercare. Be wary of any clinic offering unusually large-volume liposuction at a bargain price.

Results and how long they last

Removed fat cells do not return, so results are long-lasting provided you maintain a stable weight. The final contour appears as swelling resolves over months.

Frequently asked questions

Is liposuction a weight-loss method?

No — it removes localised fat and refines contour; it is not for weight loss or obesity.

Will the fat come back?

Removed fat cells don’t return, but remaining cells can enlarge if you gain weight, so maintain a stable weight.

Is it painful?

Soreness and bruising are normal for a week or two and are well managed.

How long do I wear the compression garment?

Usually several weeks, as advised by your surgeon.

When will I see results?

A visible change within weeks; the final contour over a few months as swelling settles.

How long do I stay in Turkey?

Often around 5–7 days depending on the areas treated.

Can several areas be treated together?

Yes, within safe limits, in one session.

What is the difference between laser, VASER and tumescent liposuction?

They differ in how the fat is loosened — tumescent is the standard; laser and VASER add energy for detail or mild skin tightening. The surgeon’s technique matters more than the device.

What is liposculpture or 360 liposuction?

An approach that sculpts several areas together (often the whole waistline) for a defined result, sometimes moving fat to another area — liposuction used artistically.

Can liposuction treat a double chin?

Yes — chin and neck (submental) liposuction is a short procedure that can define the jawline in a suitable candidate.

Is liposuction safe or dangerous?

It is safe and well-established in trained hands and an accredited hospital, with sensible volume limits. Most serious problems trace back to over-aggressive, high-volume surgery in poor settings.

Liposuction or a tummy tuck — which do I need?

Liposuction removes fat but does not tighten loose skin or repair separated muscles; a tummy tuck does. Loose skin after pregnancy or weight loss often needs a tummy tuck, or the two combined.

Is liposuction suitable for men?

Yes — commonly the flanks, abdomen and chest (see also gynecomastia).
